Gown Doffing with N95

• 1 Engage Protector and Safety Officer

  • **This is MANDATORY**.
  • Protector assists Donner.
  • Safety Officer/Reader reads the checklist.

• 2 Inspect PPE

  1. Inspect PPE ensemble for visible contamination, cuts or tears.
  2. If present, disinfect with bleach wipe.
  3. Note-appropriate EPA registered disinfectant wipe can be substituted for bleach wipe.
  4. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 3 Disinfect gloves

  1. Doffer wipes the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 4 Remove apron

  

  1. Doffer turns back to Protector or rotates 45 degrees to right or left.

  

  2. Protector assists with untying/cutting and lifting neck strap.

  

  3. Doffer rolls the apron inside to the outside.

  

  4. Dispose of apron in RED isolation trash can.

• 5 Disinfect gloves

  

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 6 Remove shoe covers

  Videos require an internet connection

  

  1. Use chair as needed.
  2. Stand in the Hot Zone at the edge of the Warm Zone.

  

  3. Slide one foot out of the shoe cover and step that foot into the Warm Zone.
  4. Slide the other foot out of the shoe cover and step that foot into the Warm Zone.

  

  5. Slide the other foot out of the shoe cover and step that foot into the Warm Zone.
  6. Dispose of shoe covers in RED isolation trash can.

• 7 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 8 Remove outer gloves

  1. Grasp one glove and slowly peel it off and discard. If preferred, the first glove can be balled in the palm of the second hand prior to removing the second glove.
  2. Slide fingers inside the second cuff, and slowly peel the glove off (without touching the outside) and discard.
  3. Dispose of gloves in RED isolation trash can.

• 9 Inspect and disinfect inner gloves

  

  1. Inspect and disinfect inner gloves with bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.
  4. If an inner glove is torn, disinfect the glove with bleach wipe. Then remove the inner gloves, perform hand hygiene, and don a new pair of gloves.

• 10 Remove tape from glove cuff

  Doffer or Protector removes tape from gown sleeve and inner glove, rolling slowly and balling up the tape.

• 11 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 12 Untape and untie gown

  

  1. Remove any tape that may have sealed gown.
  2. Protector opens the top velcro seal on back of the gown.

  

  3. Untie the knot at the waist.

• 13 Remove gown

  

  1. Protector lifts gown off shoulders.

  

  2. Doffer balls up fists.
  3. Doffer removes the gown inside to outside, rolling the gown down and away from the body, touching only inside of gown.
  4. Dispose of gown in RED isolation trash can.

• 14 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 15 Untie the surgical hood

  1. Protector stands behind Doffer.

  

  2. Protector unties the surgical hood and hands the strings forward to Doffer.

  

• 16 Remove hood, face shield, and shower cap as one unit

  1. Doffer bends forward.
  2. Doffer grabs the top edge of the hood (Protector can assist), and removes the face shield, hood and shower cap as one unit away from body.
  3. Items can also be removed individually if preferred.

  

  4. Dispose of items in RED isolation trash can.

• 17 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 18 Remove gloves

  

  1. Grasp one glove and slowly peel it off and discard. If preferred, the first glove can be balled in the palm of the second hand prior to removing the second glove.
  2. Slide fingers inside the second cuff, and slowly peel the glove off (without touching the outside) and discard.

• 19 Perform hand hygiene

  

  Use alcohol based hand rub.

• 20 Don new gloves

  

  Safety Officer provides a fresh pair of gloves for Doffer to don.

• 21 Remove the N95 respirator

  1. Tilt head forward.

  

  2. Use both hands to grab the lower strap, pull to the sides, then over head.

  

  3. Use both hands to grab the upper strap, pull to the sides, then over head.
  4. Dispose of mask in RED isolation trash can.

  Alternate Method:

  1. Tilt head slightly forward.
  2. Grasp first the lower strap, then the upper strap, and remove without touching the front of the N95 respirator. The bottom edge of the mask may be touched as needed.
  3. Dispose of mask in RED isolation trash can.

• 22 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 23 Remove bouffant hair covering

  

  If applicable.

• 24 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 25 Remove Crocs

  Videos require an internet connection

  

  1. Use chair as needed.
  2. Stand in the Warm Zone at the edge of the Cold Zone.

  

  3. Remove Croc from one foot and step that foot into the Cold Zone.

  

  4. Remove Croc from the second foot and step that foot into the Cold Zone.

  

  5. Place Crocs in designated container.

• 26 Disinfect gloves

  1. Protector and Doffer wipe the outer gloves with a bleach wipe.
  2. Allow to dry.
  3. Dispose of wipes in RED isolation trash can.

• 27 Remove inner gloves

  

  1. Grasp one glove and slowly peel it off and discard. If preferred, the first glove can be balled in the palm of the second hand prior to removing the second glove.
  2. Slide fingers inside the second cuff, and slowly peel the glove off (without touching the outside) and discard.

• 28 Perform hand hygiene

  Wash hands first with hand gel and then with soap and water for 30 seconds.

• 29 Complete final inspection

  1. Safety Officer performs a final inspection.
  2. If there is any indication of contamination of the surgical scrubs or disposable garment, immediately notify an infection control professional.

• 30 Complete medical monitoring

  Rehydrate and perform medical monitoring including vital signs check.
