Coverall Donning with PAPR

• 1 Engage Protector and Safety Officer

  • **This is MANDATORY**.
  • Protector assists Donner.
  • Safety Officer/Reader reads the checklist.

• 2 Gather needed PPE items before starting

  

  1. Checklists for the safety officer and protector.
  2. A bouffant operating room cap for those with long hair.
  3. Appropriately-sized impervious coveralls with sewn-in booties and with or without hood.
  4. Disposable hospital socks.
  5. Washable shoes (Crocs or boots).
  6. Nitrile extended cuff inner gloves.
  7. Nitrile extended cuff outer gloves.
  8. An impermeable apron.
  9. Tape (2-3 inch silk/Durapore hospital tape should be used unless unavailable. Commercial duct tape is an alternative).
  10. An eyewear securement device (Croakie, Chubb, or similar device).
  11. Knee-high boot and shoe covers.
  12. A Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) that has been previously safety-checked and readied for use.

• 3 Assemble and test PAPR

  

• 4 Don two pairs of hospital socks

  Two pairs of hospital socks are to be worn.

• 5 Don inner gloves

  

  Nitrile gloves only.

• 6 Don coverall

  

  1. Put inner glove inside the sleeve.
  2. Zip up chest high but do not seal.
  3. If attached hood present, tuck into suit.

• 7 Tape inner gloves

  Videos require an internet connection

  

  1. Tape sleeve to inner glove.
  2. Leave tab for easy removal.

• 8 Don Crocs/boots

  

  1. Pull up heel of Crocs.
  2. Boots may be worn. (Boots should be taped to coverall.)

• 9 Don knee high shoe covers

  

  Pull up as high on leg as possible over Crocs.

• 10 Don PAPR motor unit

  Videos require an internet connection

  

  Place the motor unit/belt securely around waist so it is resting on the small of the back.

• 11 Don PAPR hood

  Videos require an internet connection

  Note that this video covers steps 11, 12, and 13.

  

  Place the respirator hood over the head and secure the headband.

• 12 Turn on motor unit

  

• 13 Tuck inner hood of PAPR

  

  Tuck inner hood deep and flat into gown.

• 14 Zip and seal coverall

  

  1. Zip coverall.
  2. Seal zipper cover.
  3. Remove tape cover if present.

• 15 Arrange outer hood over shoulders

  

• 16 Tighten drawstring on PAPR hood (optional)

  

• 17 Don apron

  

  1. Apron goes over PAPR.
  2. Tie in back.

• 18 Don outer gloves with extended cuff

  

  Do not tape outer gloves.

• 19 Complete safety check

  

  1. Stand before a mirror.
  2. Protector and/or Safety Officer complete safety check.
  3. Confirm assignment before proceeding to Hot Zone.
